I want to ask this question because we have adoped a st bernard and i have 2 young kids which i am concerned about. The question is Have you ever been kissed (licked) by a slobbery dog (st bernard, mastiff, great dane. bulldog, boxer)? What did it feel like? How wet was it? The reason i want to know is because this st bernard slobbers a ton and is very affectionate (he likes to kiss your face, lips and mouth). My wife and i are ok with that and realy love the affection but i just want my 2 kids to not be alarmed or harmed by the slobber. The slobber is very overwelming and when he licks your face, lips, and mouth he leaves slobber dripping from your face! Is their anything we can do to get rid of the slobber? Is their any diseases they can get from being given wet slobbery kisses. Do you let your dog kiss you. Would you let your dog kiss you if it gave you wet slobbery kisses like this st bernard. I realize that this is one of the draw backs of getting a st bernard but me and my wife both wanted one for years. Is it ok to allow him to kiss us? even though he does slobber!

I would allow him to kiss you if you don’t mind it, because he is showing affection, but I wouldn’t let him lick your mouth/nose. Dog saliva actually has antiseptic properties, but if your dog has a parasite or illness like salmonella (or picks it up somewhere) it can be transferred to you if he is licking your mouth.

My mom had 2 large mastiffs. To keep their slobber to a minimum, she would have them eat outside and when they would come in from meal time, she would have a towel handy and wipe all their drool from drinking their water. She would also have towels placed strategically around the house and would wipe their mouths whenever it was needed. I personally hated the slobber and I would imagine if you were a small kid the dog would seem even larger than it does to us grown ups. I would definately tell your kids that this dog will be big and will love to give kisses but that the kisses are slobbery but not dangerous. Maybe even let them watch the dog give you kisses. This might ease some initial fears they may have and won’t startle them as much as if a big doggy kiss were to come out of nowhere. Good luck!
