Adopting a dog?

St B asked:

I want to ask this question because we have adoped a st bernard and i have 2 young kids which i am concerned about. The question is Have you ever been kissed (licked) by a slobbery dog (st bernard, mastiff, great dane. bulldog, boxer)? What did it feel like? How wet was it? The reason i want to know is because this st bernard slobbers a ton and is very affectionate (he likes to kiss your face, lips and mouth). My wife and i are ok with that and realy love the affection but i just want my 2 kids to not be alarmed or harmed by the slobber. The slobber is very overwelming and when he licks your face, lips, and mouth he leaves slobber dripping from your face! Is their anything we can do to get rid of the slobber? Is their any diseases they can get from being given wet slobbery kisses. Do you let your dog kiss you. Would you let your dog kiss you if it gave you wet slobbery kisses like this st bernard. I realize that this is one of the draw backs of getting a st bernard but me and my wife both wanted one for years. Is it ok to allow him to kiss us? even though he does slobber!

well those dogs are notorious for slobbering, I believe you can get there saliva glands removed, I wouldnt suggest it

Well, I let my dog kiss me, but she is a small dog and sometimes that even grosses me out. Unfortunately, Saints slobber and all you can do is frequently wipe it from the sides of their mouths. Licking is just what dogs do. And, if your dog is up to date with all of his shots you won’t get any diseases.

Kids absolutely LOVE getting kisses by dogs!! Its also really cute to see a kids reaction. Dogs have the cleanest mouths, so you cant get a disease from it. I’d just keep towels around to wipe some of the slobber off it’s face.. and off yours! Good luck with your dog!

Yes it is ok to let your dog kiss you. Dogs have cleaner mouths than humans. You will be scrubbing the slobber of your walls and baseboard at least once a month. This is an example of why you she thoroughly research a breed before you commit to one.

Added: Dog saliva is like an antiseptic.

Im not sure about your dog, but i let my labradors kiss me all the time… but please be aware they could be meaning to do something else, and or your not sure what they’ve done all day… for instance your dog could have ate a bone, played with toys, that all may be dirty.. so when your done all you can do is get a damp towel. When you use the towel you just swish it around your lips, do not put it in your mouth and or put like soap or anything.

I’ve had danes all my life, and I can safely say that big dogs tend to be great with kids. Just wipe the slobber off with a washcloth. Give him his shots, and as long as he’s an inside dog, I don’t see any problems with disease. The slobber is just slimy and wet. No big deal :) Good luck!

    Alright.
Im not absolutely positive, but Ive never herd of any circumstances of people being harmed by dog slobber, though i know from cats you can get rashes if they lick you for to long. So i would be cautious… you can i believe also get there saliva glands taken out. not something i would do… but see about a cookie for dogs that is very dry, im not sure is there are such things but i know they make dryer bones and moist bones, maybe there is some kind that could help soak up some of all the excessive slobber.
    Hope this helps.
im sorry that i dont know more.

There are very few things that can pass from dogs to humans and vice versa. Personally, I teach all my dogs NOT to lick, but if you all don’t mind it, it’s not dangerous.
