Dog aggression question?
Jen asked:
Im having problems with my 2 year old german shepard mix, Hunter. For the last week he has been constantly trying to hump, licking and staying right near my smaller dogs side. Blaze, the smaller dog, has allergies and has been itching a lot and has a few sores on his belly area, this seems to be when the problems started. If my other dog (I have 3) tries to go near Blaze, Hunter will growl and today actually attacked but didn’t draw blood from the other dog. Does anyone have any clues why this could be happening? Hunter and Blaze have lived in the same house with me for 2 years and this hasn’t happened before. Any advise would be appreciated.
This is in response to rmuff’s answer. For your information, Blaze has been to the vet for years bcause of the allergies for years. I dont think that I put in my question that I was unaware of his allergy causes or made the statement that I dont take him to the vet. He IS on medication for the allergies but they do not always help. Its people like you that give yahoo answers a bad name. I have now wasted a minute of my time responding to your hideous answer.

Because this is a new behavior, BOTH dogs should be vetted. The one to find out what is causing the itching. The other to find the source of the aggression.
It is possible that Hunter is trying to protect Blaze from the other dog because he knows that Blaze is in trouble. Why you would allow a dog to scratch like that without trying to get him some relief is beyond me. Get the dogs to the vet.
Edit: Then just get the aggressive dog vetted. ANY TIME a new behavior surfaces is reason enough to take the dog to the vet. Who knows – he could have a brain tumor.
Or you could ask your vet for a referral to an animal behaviorist.
