Is my dog having nightmares?
vistazan asked:
A 6 year old Chocolate Lab female. She has lived a very spoiled and pampered life, has always lived with me. There is no chance she ever has been abused in any way.
Every now and then she will be sleeping and lets out a very long and creepy howl. “OOOOHHHHHHHWWWWWWWW” It lasts like over 5 seconds when she does it. Its very long and drawn out. When she does it at night – its enough to scare the HELL out of you. She was in the hallway asleep last night outside of my room and did that, i about crapped my bed. It sounds like a wolf barking at the moon. Maybe im wrong – maybe shes not asleep while doing this, but i have watched her before as she does this and she appears to be asleep. Anyone got any clues whats up with this – or has anyone ever heard a dog do this while asleep?

sure, dogs hav dreams. my old brittany used to bark in her sleep & kick her legs like she was running-i always thought she was dreaming about chasing squirrels
so i figure if a dog can bark in their sleep like ginger, they can howl like your lab.

she might have slept out side before and fell in love with a wolf and she is trying to call it back

my dog does that too but she just twiches and starts to whimper and cry, i think all dogs might do it once and awhile. i think its just a dream. i just wake her up and then she doesnt do it again.

i don’t think its a nightmare, but it sounds like it could cause some lol. maybe your dog is hunting in its dream and has found its prey. or it could even be reverting back to its wild dog days and baying at the moon.

Dogs dream.
My dog sleeps in my bathroom, and almost every night I hear him in there running and barking.
Is there anything that makes your dog howl during the day? I know in my neighborhood any ambulance, fire truck or police siren sets off the entire block of dogs, so it could be that she’s just dreaming about chasing down ambulances, or about something that makes her howl.

dogs do have dreams. my dog will lay on my bed at night and he will start to move his feet like he is running and he will start to chew even though he has no food in his mouth and he will start to growl and i have to wake him up otherwise he does this for hours and i cant sleep. it is completely normal. my other dog barks in his sleep. ur dog just howls. different dogs do different things. it sounds normal to me

Its very common for dogs to ark in their sleep. She could be out hunting a racoon and baying because it went up a tree, or she is calling to other dogs in her little dream world, it doesnt necessarily mean that she is having a nightmare. Though, dogs can have them. When i got Chelsea from the shelter, she had nightmares almost every night for about a month and to this day she gets them every once in a while.
If it worries you, just wake her up. To wake up Chelsea, so I dont startle her, I usually sneak up to her quietly then pet her head as gently as I can and whisper to her. Sometimes she will startle and wake then fall back asleep, and other times it just brings her out of her dream. Its kind of cute. She will be whimpering and crying like her life is in danger and I can pet her real soft and say “Its okay,, baby” and she will freeze and sniff towards me then her whole body relaxes and she kind of sighs and falls back in to a deep sleep.
